Background

A North American retailer of media sought to change the strategic business planning practices internally and with the supplier (publishing) community as a means of achieving aggressive growth targets. The retailer’s senior leadership contacted TPG to lead the development and activation of state-of-the-art business planning with the client’s business teams and the supplier community.

Objective

Develop a comprehensive strategic plan that would turnaround the company by creating a more focused, consumer and retail customer-centric culture.

TPG Approach

A team of TPG consultants led the development of company and business unit strategies, designed consumer research, competitive analysis and business assessment processes for all forms of media. TPG assisted the retail client in evaluating the capabilities and capacity of the publishers and led the selection of partners to participate in joint business planning. Business unit and category strategies and breakthrough tactics in product mix, pricing, merchandising and supply chain drove new organizational behaviors and shopper engagement.

Impact/Results

Business unit and categories utilizing the newly developed strategic planning processes had three to four times the revenue growth vis-a-vis the control businesses that would eventually install the new ways of working.
